Hypnosis – What It Is And What It Is Not

Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing arm, hypnotherapy. Some consider them to be some type of spell while others hesitate to even recognize their existence. Given below are some general beliefs associated with hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.

There is no mysticism or rituals involved in hypnosis. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have an important role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very simple to acquire and practice. Even people who have observed hypnosis on others usually refuse to acknowledge it. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Even mentally strong people can fall under the charms of a specialist hypnosis practitioner.

Another notion about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A hypnotized individual is fully alert of what is going on in his surroundings. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes entirely and is therefore able to focus fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.

Some scientists have concluded that hypnosis works on just 5% of the world’s population, and this is another common myth. The researchers are somewhat true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis technique without acknowledging individual differences in character and temperament. People differ in their characters and personalities, and therefore there have to be different hypnosis methods to suit the temperaments of different individuals.

People also tend to connect hypnosis to meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and generally has no communication involved in the process. The state of trance and the state of hypnosis are entirely different from each other too. The person doesn’t communicate to achieve a state of trance, on the other hand hypnosis is not possible without communication.

A majority of people believe that it is not possible to bring about alterations in one’s appearance and behaviour through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is obviously not magic that it can transform the physical appearance of an individual just like that. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.

Undergoing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a richer and satisfying life, and thus one should not pay heed to the misconceptions, and go for hypnotic sessions with an unbiased mind.
