Steelers Beat Titans in Season Opener
Someone give Lendale White a tissue. I believe he might seek to cover his head beneath one during his trip away from Pittsburgh.
On a night where Troy Polamalu succumbed to a knee wound, Wille Parker and the remaining Steelers running back corps could not manage to get the ball rolling, and Hines Ward did something he rarely does – lost the ball during a big play situation. Ben Roethlisberger stood steady in the backfield, took several sacks, although ultimately architected yet another game winning drive to help the Steelers outlast the Titans 13-10 in the football season opener.
It didn’t begin well for Big Ben and company; Tennessee looked as good as ever and basically shut the Steelers running game down.
Big Ben was cool under pressure, although. Sure, he threw two picks (Brett Favre does this all the time, and there are people eager to bow down to him when he enters a room, so get off it).
However he additionally threw for 363 yards, including 60 yards on the final series of the game.
The team’s defense stepped up and executed when the chips were down, particularly on special teams, where a blocked Rob Bironas field goal led to their lone touchdown of the game.
Of course, that play lost them Troy Polamalu, but it only set them back for a moment or 2.
If Hines Ward had either fallen down or turned slightly more quickly at the climax of his run in the fourth quarter, the game would have ended sooner.
But this was too good a contest to not go to OT. Both organizations had played their hearts out, both organizations had players lost to injury, and overtime seemed the only reasonable way to resolve the game.
If, , you can call NFL overtimes fair.
After the Steelers won the toss, Roethlisberger and company made the most of a winded Titans defense, driving downfield for 63 yards to arrange the game-winning field goal.
